INTRODUCTION TO THE LOCATIONS

Yoda Wewa: A vast expanse of dry zone low land which was converted into a water retention facility by the Ruhuna Royalty in the past is now a tank that supports a diverse eco-system that is host to a variety of bird species. It is located about 3km away from the Tissamaharama Town on the Tissamaharama – Kirinda Road.

 

Tissa Wewa: Situated North of Tissamaharama, is the beautiful Tissa Wewa, an expansive artificial lake built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC of the ancient Southern Kingdom of Ruhuna. The tank hosts a variety of aquatic birds including Bitterns, Herons & Egrets skimming across the waters shaded by a procession of majestic Margosa trees.

 

Debara Wewa: Another haven for birdlife with a surface covered with water lilies. The Debara Wewa allows you to conclude your excursion by experiencing more birds, butterflies as well as dragonflies amidst hustle and bustle of the nearby village.

A variety of birds:  Spot billed Pelican, Greater Thick Knee, Black Winged Stilt, Painted Stork, Grey Heron, Eurasian Spoonbill, Whiskered Tern, Brahminy Kite, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Indian Peafowl, Green Imperial Pigeon, Orange Breasted Green Pigeon, Greater Coucal, Cotton Pygmy Goose etc.
Reptiles: Land Monitor, Common Garden Lizard, and the Green Garden Lizard.

Butterflies: Crimson Rose, Small Salmon Arab, Pioneer, Common Jezebel, to the Lime Butterfly, Peacock Pansy, Grey Pansy etc.
